Water Sale Information
IMPORTANT WATER SALE INFORMATION FROM THE
MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE
A Yes Vote on Ballot Question #1 is A Win for All Residents of Manalapan Township
- Manalapan Township owns a water system in the Southern portion of Manalapan that serves about a quarter of Township residents.
- The rest of Manalapan residents are served by Gordons Corner Water, private well, or other water system.
- For over 30 years, Veolia (the company was previously known as United Water and then Suez) has had a private/public partnership with Manalapan to run the day-to-day operation of the Water system. The same team has managed the water facilities despite the change in company names.
- The Township kept up with all capital repairs, but as is with all infrastructure, as the water system ages, more repairs need to be made.
- All residents of Manalapan should not have to pay for the capital repairs and maintenance for a small portion of those with Veolia water.
- As the most cost-effective choice for ALL residents of Manalapan, we made a Public Request for Bidders for water companies interested in acquiring the water system.
- Bids were advertised and one bid was received from Veolia; the current operator of the Township water system. A referendum is required to be on the November ballot in order to approve the water sale.
- Veolia bid four million dollars, which Manalapan must use to pay down existing municipal debt. A tax benefit for ALL residents of Manalapan.
- If the referendum is approved, rates for those in the Veolia water system area, will not increase for the first two years, and will increase by no more than 3% for the following three years.
- If the sale is not approved rates will significantly increase so the Township can finance the improvements to the water infrastructure on its own.
Gordons Corner Customers:
- Voting Yes will have no impact on customers of Gordon’s Corner Water Co., a separate privately owned water system serving residents in the northern half of Manalapan for the last 50 years. Current customers of Gordon’s Corner will continue to receive water from Gordon’s Corner. Gordon’s Corner and rates will not be impacted by the sale.
- However, if the referendum fails to pass, residents supplied by Gordon’s Corner will be responsible for paying to upgrade to the township-owned water system — even though they will continue to be supplied by Gordon’s Corner.
Additional information is available at the Township Website www.mtnj.org; including all Bidding Documents and documents authorizing the sale of the Water System.
Open Houses will be held throughout the month of October in a variety of locations including October 10th at 6:30pm at the Manalapan Township Community Center located on Route 33.
