A Message from New Jersey Natural Gas

With the onset of significantly cold weather, and with another significant cold front predicted next week. New Jersey Natural Gas is engaging our customers to provide more information on how to reduce their energy use, save money and keep their homes and businesses safe and comfortable.

Here are some key points to understand about how the colder weather affects bills as we enter the winter season:

  • Energy usage for home heating is seasonal.  Colder weather means higher usage and higher bills as furnaces and other natural gas appliances work harder and use more energy to maintain indoor temperatures.
    • Where a typical customer may see low “therm” usage during warmer summer and shoulder months, usage is typically much higher in the winter months.
  • After a mild October and November, December 2024 has arrived with significantly colder temperatures than past months and the prior year.
    • December was 92% colder than November.
    • December 2024 was 22% colder than December 2023.
    • January 2025 is shaping up to be even colder – with temperatures forecasted to be more than 20% colder than January 2024.

These factors come into play when it comes to higher natural gas bills that are experienced during colder winter weather.

Importantly, we want to share tips to save energy and information on energy assistance and payment options for anyone having trouble keeping up with their bills.

We know that rising costs are of paramount concern to you and your constituents – we hope you find this information useful, and we are available to help with any questions or additional concerns you may have, including walking customers through their actual bills, usage history, and understanding the impact of usage and rate changes on their final billed amount.
