July Fire Safety Tips

June 26, 2019

As the Fourth of July approaches the Manalapan Township Committee and our Fire Prevention Bureau would like to point out the following statistics from the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

Fireworks are often used to mark special events and holidays. However, they are not safe in the hands of consumers. Fireworks cause thousands of burns & eye injuries each year.

Fireworks cause an average of 18,000 fires a year that includes 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, & 16,900 outdoor & other fires.

These fires cause $43 Million in Property Damage.

In 2017 Hospital Emergency Rooms treated an estimated 12,900 people for Fireworks related injuries.  Children under 15 years of age accounted for over 36% of those treated.

Recent changes to the laws in New Jersey allow the sale of sparklers and other novelty ground poppers.  Remember, anything that can be fired or shot in the air is still illegal.

Please be aware that sparklers account for over 1/4 of the burn injuries for children under 15 years old. It should be noted that Sparklers burn at over 1,200 degrees!!

There are many Professional Fireworks displays scheduled around the County during July.

Among them is the Manalapan Township Arts Council Summer Concert and Car Show on July 12th and on July 24th opening day of the Monmouth County Fair.

Enjoy your Barbecue's and picnics, and please be safe. If you want to see fireworks, go to a public show put on by experts.  Leave it up to the Professionals!!

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!
